Expect more economic cooperation between the cities of Davao and Zamboanga after their respective mayors signed a long-overdue sisterhood agreement in Zamboanga City today.
Former Davao City Mayor, now President Rodrigo Duterte and Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco signed as early April 9, 2015, a pledge for the sisterhood agreement. The sisterhood agreement was, however, formally signed only after six years by Climaco, and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
“Davao recognizes the need to establish linkage and build better connections with other cities especially in Mindanao where we share the same issues and challenges,” Duterte said.
“Our two cities are individually strong but we are stronger together,” she added.
She said that “it is only when we commit to work together and learn from one another that we can better serve our respective constituents and help contribute to the growth of Mindanao.”
“The sisterhood agreement aims to promote mutually beneficial cooperation and deeper understanding between the parties as stated in Article 2,” Zamboanga City Vice Mayor Rommel Agan said during the signing.
Among the fields of cooperation identified under Article 2 of the agreement are: tourism and culture, agriculture, trade and commerce.
Agan said both parties gather vast number of tourists and highly value cultural heritage so it is deemed favorable to exchange good tourism practices and cultural preservation techniques.
Davao and Zamboanga cities agreed to promote their respective cities and support easy access to each city.
Both cities also consider agriculture as one of their major industries, and both parties agreed to share and exchange ideas on agriculture enhancements, systems, and programs
“The parties may provide an exchange in necessary machines, crops and products that are lacking within their partner city,” he said.
Both cities also agreed to maintain open communication when it comes to potential business ventures, investments and product trade.
The sisterhood agreement, which is valid for five years subject to renewal for another 5 years, was made possible through a resolution issued by the respective City Councils.
Duterte thanked the Zamboanga City Council for the “passage of Resolution No. 885 Series of 2019 and the Davao City Council for issuing counterpart Resolution No 014-19 series of 2019” which allowed the mayors to forge the agreement.
